Flicking through the published Freedom of Information requests on the Somerset County Council website yesterday made for some shocking reading.
The best ones seems to have come to fruition in May...possibly candidates digging for information to use against the Tory-led council in the recent council elections?
Amongst the released figures are info on sickness levels at county hall:
* There were 102,873 days lost to staff sickness absence in the year 2010/11
* 42 employees had more than 6 months off work due to sickness in the same year
* 19 employees had between one and two years off work due to sickness that year
There aren't any figures for the previous year so we don't know if there has been a rise due to severe stress related to redundancy fears/low morale.
But by far the biggest story is the sharp rise in dismissals at county hall. There were just 12 in the year 2008/9. In the year 2009/10 the figure rose to 32. That's a shocking increase of 200%.
This gives rise to the thought that perhaps disciplinary procedures are being tightened up to save money on redundancy pay.
It will be interesting to find out the figures from 2010/11 when we have them.
